Most BMWs since the early 2000s ship without a spare tire - just a can of sealant or, more often, nothing at all - because they're built around run-flat tires. Run-flats have reinforced sidewalls that can support the car's weight for roughly 50 miles at reduced speed after a puncture, which is BMW's substitute for carrying a spare. If your car came with run-flats from the factory, replacing them with non-run-flat tires means you're now driving without a spare AND without run-flat capability - worth thinking through before you swap types.
The honest downside: run-flats ride firmer than an equivalent standard tire because that reinforced sidewall doesn't flex as much. Every option below carries a version of that tradeoff.

Amazon1. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S ZP - Best Summer Performance
ZP means "Zero Pressure" - Michelin's run-flat designation, and it's on a huge share of factory M Sport and 4-series cars for a reason. This is about as close as a run-flat gets to matching a standard performance summer tire's grip and steering feel, which is genuinely hard to engineer given how much stiffer the sidewall construction has to be. If your car left the factory on Michelin ZP rubber, replacing like-for-like with this is the safest bet for keeping the handling balance BMW tuned the car around.

2. Pirelli P Zero PZ4-Luxury Run-Flat - Best for M Cars
Pirelli builds several distinct P Zero variants, and the PZ4-Luxury is tuned specifically for the extra weight and torque of M-division cars rather than being a generic sport tire with a run-flat sidewall bolted on. Expect better heat management under sustained hard driving than a standard-duty run-flat, which matters if this is going on an M3, M4, or M5 that actually gets driven the way it was built to be driven.

3. Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 - Best Winter Run-Flat
Finding a run-flat tire with genuine winter compound and siping is harder than it should be - most winter run-flats are an afterthought. The Sottozero 3 isn't; it's a real winter tire that happens to also carry run-flat construction, which means you're not choosing between winter grip and the no-spare safety net BMW built the car around. If you live somewhere with real winters and drive a run-flat-equipped BMW, this is the tire to look at first.

4. Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus - Best All-Season Alternative
Not a run-flat - worth being upfront about that. It's here because plenty of BMW owners deliberately move away from run-flats once the factory set wears out, trading the run-flat safety net for a softer ride and lower replacement cost, and carry a compact repair kit or plug kit instead. If that's the trade you're considering, this is one of the better all-season options to land on, covered in more detail in our all-season tire ranking.

5. Pirelli P Zero PZ4-Sport UHP - Best UHP Summer
The Sport variant sits between the Luxury run-flat above and a pure track tire - ultra-high-performance grip for M Sport trims and non-M performance models that want sharper turn-in than a standard summer tire without going full track-day compound. Good middle-ground pick if the M-specific PZ4-Luxury feels like overkill for your car.
