Air entering the clutch hydraulic system happens when the fluid level drops below the intake port, usually due to a leak somewhere in the circuit. On BMWs, this manifests as a soft or spongy clutch pedal and poor release, even when the leak itself is small or slow. Low fluid is the root cause of most air intrusion events in clutch systems.

01

What it feels like

The clutch pedal will feel spongy or mushy when you press it, lacking the firm resistance of a healthy system. Gear engagement becomes difficult, especially at cold start or during repeated shifts. You may need to pump the pedal several times to build enough pressure to disengage the clutch fully, or the clutch may not release cleanly at all. The problem worsens after the car sits overnight or when the engine is cold.

How to confirm it

  1. Open the clutch and brake fluid reservoir under the hood and compare the level to the MIN and MAX marks. If it is at or below MIN, fluid loss is confirmed.
  2. Bleed the clutch system using a one-way bleeder bottle or pressure bleeder connected to the slave cylinder. Watch for air bubbles in the expelled fluid.
  3. Top up the reservoir to MAX and cycle the clutch pedal 20 to 30 times, then check the level again. If it drops back down quickly, an active leak is present.
  4. Visually inspect the master cylinder body, the hydraulic line and quick-connect fittings, and the slave cylinder for wet spots, drips, or staining that point to the leak source.
