Air Trapped After Coolant Service

A poorly bled cooling system can trap air pockets after you drain and refill the coolant. This air compresses under heat, pushing coolant out of the reservoir during operation, then the level settles when the engine cools. The level sensor reads low even though the reservoir appears full when cold. This is common after DIY coolant service or if the bleed procedure was skipped.
What it feels like
You see the low coolant warning light come on, often within a few days or weeks after topping off the coolant. The reservoir looks full when you check it cold. The light may disappear after the car sits overnight, then return after driving. If overheating or rising temperature gauges accompany the warning, the problem is broader than just trapped air. The warning typically repeats in a cycle tied to heat and cooldown cycles.
How to confirm it
- Check whether the low coolant warning appeared soon after a coolant drain, refill, or coolant system repair. If the timing lines up with service work, air entrapment is the most likely culprit.
- Review how the system was filled. If you or a shop only topped off the reservoir without running the full BMW bleed procedure (heater on max, running the engine to temperature, venting the air), trapped air is very likely.
- Perform a complete bleed with the engine off. Set the heater to maximum, slowly open the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing or highest cooling line while watching for a steady stream of coolant with no air bubbles. Close the valve once coolant flows clean.
- Run the engine to full operating temperature, then let it cool completely. Check the cold level again and verify it sits at the full mark. If the level drops after the next heat cycle, air is still trapped or the level sensor is faulty.
