Bent Wheel from Pothole Impact

A pothole, curb strike, or hard impact can bend a BMW alloy wheel and throw it out of round. When this happens, the wheel no longer sits flat and true, causing vibration and handling issues that worsen with speed. The inner barrel of the wheel is often where the damage hides, making it easy to miss on a quick visual check. This failure typically shows up as steering shimmy, speed-sensitive vibration, or a visible wobble when the wheel spins.
What it feels like
A bent wheel usually announces itself through steering wheel vibration that gets worse as you speed up. At highway speeds, you may notice shimmy in the steering, a rhythmic pulsing in the pedals, or a thumping sensation. Some drivers report a slight pull to one side or a feeling that the car is not tracking straight. In some cases, you can see the wheel rim shift side-to-side when you look at it from the driver seat while parked, especially if you turn the wheel to full lock and watch the rim from the inside.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and inspect both the outer lip and inner barrel of the affected wheel for flat spots, dents, or a visible bend. Look carefully at the inside edge where damage is often hidden.
- Raise the vehicle on a jack and secure it safely. Spin the wheel by hand and watch the rim edge from multiple angles. A bent wheel will show radial runout (up and down wobble) or lateral runout (side-to-side movement).
- If the runout is not obvious by eye, use a dial indicator mounted to the suspension to measure radial and lateral runout. Most shops will road-force balance the wheel to confirm, which also checks for hidden bends.
- Swap the suspect wheel with a known straight wheel from another position and drive the car. If the vibration follows the wheel, the original wheel is bent. If the vibration stays in the same spot on the car, the issue lies elsewhere (suspension, tire balance, or tire damage).

A bent wheel cannot be safely repaired on a BMW and must be replaced. Choose wheels matched to your series and generation to ensure proper fitment and safety.
