A bent wheel or excessive rim runout means the wheel is no longer rotating perfectly true. Even if the tire itself is fine, a structurally bent or dented wheel will cause vibration at speed because the contact patch changes as it spins. A simple balance job may quiet the symptom temporarily but will not fix a wheel with real damage. This is a common misdiagnosis because owners often assume "vibration at highway speed" means just a balance weight issue.
What it feels like
High-speed vibration that may feel different depending on where the bent wheel is mounted. If the vibration is strongest in the steering wheel and happens between 40 and 70 mph, suspect a front wheel. If you feel it through the seat or entire body, check the rear wheels. The vibration may worsen on bumpy roads because a bent wheel flexes more under load. Unlike a simple imbalance, a severely bent wheel often cannot be balanced to zero vibration no matter how many weights are added. You may also notice uneven tire wear or a thumping sensation at low speeds if the bend is severe.
How to confirm it
- Visually inspect all four wheel rims, especially the lip and barrel (sidewall area). Look for flat spots, creases, cracks, or obvious dents from curb strikes or pothole impacts. Even small dents can cause runout.
- Have a tire shop measure wheel runout using a balancer or runout gauge. Lateral runout (side-to-side wobble) should be under 2 mm; radial runout (up-and-down hop) should also be under 2 mm. Values above 3 mm indicate a bent wheel that needs replacement.
- Swap the suspected wheel to a different axle position (for example, move the front left wheel to the rear right) and take a test drive. If the vibration follows the wheel, you have found the culprit. If the vibration stays in the original location, the problem is elsewhere.
