A bent wheel rim creates visible wobble and steering shake that often feels identical to a tire or suspension problem. Common causes include pothole strikes, curb impact, and speed bump collisions. The damage ranges from minor dents to severe radial or lateral runout, and the severity depends on how far the rim has moved out of true.

01

What it feels like

You'll notice a rhythmic vibration or shake through the steering wheel (front wheels) or across the whole car (rear wheels) that changes with speed. The wobble is often speed-specific, peaking at certain highway velocities and sometimes disappearing at low speeds or high speeds. Visual clues include a wheel that appears to "hop" side-to-side when you raise the car, or a noticeable bulge or flat spot on the rim lip. Unlike tire imbalance, a bent rim typically produces a visible lateral movement rather than just vibration.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Inspect the inner and outer edges of each rim for dents, creases, or flat spots. Pay close attention to the bead seat (where the tire contacts the rim) and sidewalls.
  2. Raise the car safely on a jack and spin each wheel slowly by hand while watching the rim edge. Look for lateral (side-to-side) or radial (up-and-down) runout relative to the hub center.
  3. Mark a reference point on the rim and spin it again to measure how far it deviates from true. Even 2-3 mm of lateral runout can produce noticeable shake.
  4. Swap the suspect wheel with a known-straight wheel from another car (same bolt pattern and size) and take a short test drive. If the wobble moves to the new location, the original rim is bent.
