A catalytic converter works by using chemical reactions to convert harmful exhaust gases into less toxic compounds. When the converter ages, accumulates carbon, or fails internally, it cannot process sulfur compounds efficiently. The result is a rotten-egg smell that becomes most noticeable when the catalyst is hot or after spirited driving. On BMW models, this smell typically comes from the tailpipe rather than leaking into the cabin, making it a clear sign of converter degradation.
What it feels like
You will notice a strong sulfur or rotten-egg odor from the rear of the vehicle, especially after the engine has warmed up or during hard acceleration. The smell may be faint when cold but intensify once the catalytic converter reaches operating temperature. Some owners report the odor being strongest right after a spirited drive when exhaust temperatures peak. In some cases, you may also experience a slight loss of power or feel the engine running slightly rich. If the smell appears inside the cabin rather than at the tailpipe, investigate an exhaust leak or battery charging fault first, as those can create misleading odor patterns.
How to confirm it
- Connect an OBD-II scanner and pull codes. Look for catalyst efficiency codes (P0420 series) or oxygen sensor faults (P0130-P0160) that suggest the converter is not processing exhaust properly.
- Monitor live fuel trims and upstream/downstream O2 sensor readings. High positive fuel trim (the engine running rich) combined with poor downstream O2 sensor response points to catalytic converter underperformance.
- Listen for a rattling sound from the undercarriage during acceleration, which indicates a fractured substrate inside the converter casing.
- Compare the odor intensity on a cold start versus after the catalytic converter is fully hot. True catalyst sulfur smell worsens significantly as temperature rises.
