A defective or uneven tire can pull the steering to one side during normal driving, braking, or acceleration. This happens because of internal damage like belt separation, radial pull (conicity), cupping, or uneven wear patterns. While alignment and suspension issues cause similar behavior, tire defects are common culprits and relatively quick to rule out with a simple swap test.

What it feels like

The steering wheel pulls steadily toward one side, requiring you to hold correction pressure to stay centered in the lane. Some drivers notice the pull worsens over bumps or under braking, while others feel it mainly during acceleration. Uneven wear visible on the tread, cupping (scalloped dips along the tire edge), bulges in the sidewall, or exposed cords all point to a tire problem. The car may also feel slightly unstable or wander, especially on highway driving.

How to confirm it

  1. Inspect both front tires closely. Look for cupping, sidewall bulges, belt separation visible through worn tread, or severely uneven wear on one edge of the tire.
  2. Swap the left and right front tires side-to-side, then test drive on the same road and road surface where you noticed the pull.
  3. If the pull reverses direction or disappears after the swap, the tire is the cause. If the pull stays on the same side of the vehicle, look to alignment or suspension instead.
  4. Check the overall tread wear pattern. Wear concentrated on one edge suggests inflation or alignment issues compounding the tire defect.
