Exhaust Flap Stuck Open

Many BMW models use a valved exhaust system where an electronically controlled flap regulates backpressure and noise. When the flap gets stuck in the open position, the spring clip holding it fails, or the actuator malfunctions, the exhaust becomes significantly louder and sometimes rattles. This is one of the most common causes of sudden exhaust noise in modern BMWs and is straightforward to diagnose and repair.
What it feels like
The main symptom is a sudden and noticeable increase in exhaust noise during acceleration and at cruise. The sound may be a harsh drone or a rattling metallic noise that comes and goes. The noise is typically loudest under load. If the flap is only partially stuck, you might hear a rattle that seems to move around the rear of the car. In most cases, engine performance and fuel economy remain normal, which helps rule out upstream engine problems.
How to confirm it
- Locate the rear exhaust flap assembly under the car, usually near the muffler. Look at the actuator linkage and the spring clip or fixing bow that holds the flap in place.
- Visually inspect for a missing, bent, or broken retaining clip. A missing clip is the most common cause of a stuck-open flap.
- If you have a diagnostic scanner, command the valve open and closed to feel or listen for smooth movement. Without a scanner, carefully grasp the flap linkage by hand and work it back and forth to feel for resistance or grinding.
- Have an assistant rev the engine while you listen and observe the flap. A stuck-open flap will not respond to throttle changes, while a healthy flap will vibrate slightly with engine cycles.
Parts that fix it
The fix depends on what has failed. If the clip is missing or broken, a replacement actuator assembly or new spring clip may be all you need. If the actuator itself has failed, a new unit is required. Here are common solutions:
