Exhaust Hanger or Bracket Loose

A loose exhaust hanger, bracket, or support lets the exhaust system move and rattle against the chassis. BMW owners often notice this as a metallic rattle from underneath the car that changes pitch or intensity with engine vibration or road bumps. The problem is common across model years and typically worsens over time as rubber isolators crack or hardware fasteners work loose.
What it feels like
You hear a rattle or clang coming from underneath the vehicle, usually somewhere between the engine and rear axle. The noise is often louder during acceleration, deceleration, or when driving over rough pavement. Some owners report it sounds like something loose is banging against metal. The rattle may disappear at steady highway speeds and return when you hit a bump or change throttle position. The sound typically does not come from inside the cabin but rather from the undercarriage itself.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground with the engine cold. Locate the exhaust system under the vehicle, starting at the manifold and following the pipe toward the rear.
- Inspect each exhaust hanger and bracket. Look for cracked, missing, or deteriorated rubber isolators where the exhaust attaches to the chassis. Check all bolts and clamps for looseness.
- Carefully shake the exhaust pipe by hand at different points. Watch for movement against the heat tunnel, heat shields, or rear subframe. The pipe should move only slightly on its rubber mounts.
- Look for witness marks, rubbing, or paint wear on the exhaust, heat shields, or chassis where contact has occurred.
