A failed wheel sensor battery causes the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to lose contact with one or more wheels, even when tire pressures are correct. Each BMW tire sensor runs on a coin-cell battery that typically lasts 5-10 years. When that battery dies or weakens, the receiver module no longer detects a signal from that wheel, triggering a malfunction warning on the dashboard.

What it feels like

You will see a TPMS malfunction warning light or a greyed-out tire graphic on the instrument cluster. The warning may appear constantly, or it may come and go depending on temperature and driving conditions. Unlike a low-pressure alert, this fault shows up even after you confirm all four tires are properly inflated. If the warning points to a specific wheel position, the sensor at that location has almost certainly lost its signal. Some owners notice the warning appears after cold nights or long periods parked, when sensor transmission is weakest.

How to confirm it

  1. Connect a BMW-capable diagnostic scanner (such as a NEODIAG, XTOOL, or OBD2 reader) to the vehicle and read the TPMS/RDC fault memory. Note which wheel sensor shows a missing or weak signal code.
  2. Check the live sensor data if your scanner supports it. A dead or failing battery will show no transmission or very low signal strength from that wheel.
  3. Physically inspect the tire pressures at all four wheels with a manual gauge and confirm they are within specification. If pressures are correct but the warning persists at one wheel, the sensor battery is the likely culprit.
  4. Swap the suspect wheel with a known-good wheel from another position (for example, move the left-front to the right-rear). Drive briefly and observe whether the warning follows the wheel or stays in the original position. If it follows the wheel, the sensor battery has failed.
  5. Replace the tire pressure sensor at the affected wheel and reinitialize the TPMS system according to your BMW owner manual or the sensor manufacturer instructions.
