Faulty Headlight Module

A faulty headlight module causes one or both headlights to stop working even though the bulb is good. On BMWs with adaptive HID or LED systems, the control module, ballast, or driver electronics can fail due to corrosion, moisture, or heat stress. This is a maintenance-level issue that should be addressed soon to restore proper lighting and visibility.
What it feels like
You'll notice one headlight is completely dark while the other works normally. The outage happens suddenly, not gradually. On newer BMWs with adaptive lighting, you might also see a dashboard warning or fault message related to the headlight system. If both lights are out, the problem may still point to a single module controlling both sides. The headlight may work intermittently if the module connection is loose or corroded, flickering on and off as you drive.
How to confirm it
- Read the fault codes from your BMW using a diagnostic scanner. Connect to the footwell module, lighting control module, or headlight module depending on your model year. Look for codes pointing to a bulb outage, module failure, or ballast fault.
- Swap the left and right headlight modules if your BMW design allows it (many models do). If the dead light now works and the previously working light goes dark, the module itself is faulty. If the light stays dead, look elsewhere.
- Inspect the faulty module housing for corrosion, water droplets, or burn marks. Check the connector pins for green or white oxidation. Moisture intrusion and heat damage are common failure modes.
- Test for power and ground at the module connector using a multimeter. If power or ground is missing, trace the wiring back to the fuse and relay. A blown fuse or stuck relay may be the real culprit.
- If the module tests good but the light is still out, the bulb or igniter/ballast may be bad. Swap the bulb from the working side to confirm.
