Faulty HID or LED Bulb

A faulty HID or LED bulb is one of the more straightforward headlight failures, but on modern BMWs the line between a dead bulb and a failed driver module is not always obvious. This cause typically shows up as a single non-functioning low beam or high beam, often noticed when the car is started at dusk or when the automatic lights engage. High-voltage HID systems and integrated LED modules are both vulnerable to internal burnout, burnt pin contacts, and moisture ingress over time.
What it feels like
One headlight simply does not come on, or it flickers and then goes dark. On HID-equipped cars the arc tube may flash briefly before failing. On LED headlights the entire light bar or low-beam section goes out rather than dimming gradually. A warning message may appear in the instrument cluster, often reading "Headlight malfunction" or similar. The affected side is usually consistent, not random. In some cases the DRL on that side still functions while the main beam is dead, which helps narrow the fault to the bulb or module rather than the wiring harness.
How to confirm it
- Run a BMW ISTA vehicle test first. Address any stored faults in the BDC, FRM, or LED main light module before condemning the bulb or the module itself.
- Follow the ISTA test plan to swap the left and right LED main light modules side to side. Note whether the fault moves to the opposite headlight or stays on the original side.
- After pulling the module, inspect the connector for proper locking engagement. Reseat it until the tab audibly clicks. BMW specifies securing the connector with K6 adhesive set (part 83 19 2 317 925) after refit to prevent re-unlocking.
- If the fault travels with the swapped module to the other side, the module is the failed component. If the fault stays on the original side, suspect wiring, the control unit, or a corrosion issue at the connector.
- Keep an approved BMW battery charger connected throughout diagnosis to maintain stable voltage, then verify correct light operation before reinstalling the headlight assembly and front bumper.
Safety note: A non-functioning headlight reduces forward visibility and makes the car less conspicuous to other drivers at night, increasing crash risk. Do not attempt DIY disassembly if the headlight contains adaptive LED hardware, the connector shows heat damage, or the fault returns after a swap test. In those situations, incorrect handling can worsen electrical damage and leave the lighting system unsafe. Bumper and headlight removal per ISTA repairs 51 11 156 and 63 12 140 is required for full module access and is not a parking-lot job.
Parts that fix it
The parts below cover common BMW applications where a bulb or full headlight assembly replacement resolves the failure. Match the part to your exact chassis before ordering.
LED Headlight Assembly with Angel Eyes for BMW E38 730i 740i 1998-2002 by Generic. A complete drop-in assembly for E38 owners replacing a failed or water-damaged headlight unit on both sides.
H7 CREE LED Headlight Bulbs 6000K for BMW E46 323i 325i 328i 330i by Generic. Direct H7 bulb replacement for E46 models where the original halogen or retrofit bulb has burnt out at one or both contacts.
LED Headlight Assembly for BMW E60 2004-2010 with DRL by Generic - $459.99. Full assembly replacement for the E60 5 Series, integrating DRL so a single failed unit does not leave the front lighting incomplete.
PENSUN LED Halo Projector Headlights for BMW E39 by OEM - $185.99. Projector-style replacement pair for E39 5 Series when the original headlight unit has suffered internal LED or housing failure.
AmeriLite E39 Sedan - Projector Halogen Headlights by OEM - $169.99. Halogen projector headlight set for E39 owners who prefer to return to a conventional bulb setup after an integrated LED failure.
Ronnin E36 LED Dual Rims Headlights Pair Black by OEM - $168.99. Pair replacement for E36 3 Series where one or both headlight units have failed at the bulb or housing level.
What else to check
If swapping the module does not move the fault, the FRM (Footwell Module) is a common culprit on E-series BMWs, particularly after water ingress through the cabin or sunroof drains. Corroded connectors at the headlight plug, a failing ballast on HID-equipped cars, or a shorted DRL circuit can all produce identical symptoms. On newer F and G-series cars, the LED driver board inside the headlight assembly itself may have failed rather than the external module.
