Front toe out means the front wheels point slightly away from the centerline of the car instead of straight ahead or slightly inward. Even a small deviation from spec can cause the steering to wander, requiring constant correction on the highway. This alignment error often appears alongside worn suspension bushings or steering play, making it a common culprit in multi-part steering feel complaints on BMWs of all generations.
What it feels like
The main symptom is steering wander, where the car drifts left or right without input and requires you to keep making small steering corrections to stay centered in the lane. The car may feel loose or unstable on the highway, especially in crosswinds. You might notice the steering returns to center slowly after turning, or the front end feels slightly disconnected. At low speeds, the car usually behaves normally, but wander becomes obvious at sustained highway speeds. Tire wear may be uneven or accelerated on the edges of the front tires.
How to confirm it
- Measure front toe on a calibrated alignment rack. Most BMW models specify toe between 0 and 0.15 degrees per side, often listed as a range. Any reading outside that range, particularly toe out, is diagnostic.
- Check the service history for recent alignment work, lowering, or suspension changes. Nonstandard wheel offsets or tire sizes can also shift toe geometry. Confirm the car has not been modified.
- Verify toe remains in spec through suspension travel by checking alignment at ride height, then again with weight on the front bumper to simulate braking. Toe should not shift significantly.
- Correct toe to BMW specification at an alignment shop and road test. If wander disappears, toe out was the primary cause. If wander persists, check for worn control arm bushings, play in the steering rack, or electric steering faults via scan tool.
Parts that fix it
Toe out is a geometry setting, not a part failure, so correction requires alignment. However, if worn suspension bushings or loose control arms are allowing toe drift, replacement hardware may be needed.
