A fuel delivery fault or injector problem starves one or more cylinders of fuel, causing uneven combustion and noticeable engine shaking. This issue typically appears at idle or under light throttle and often pairs with a flashing check-engine light, rough running, or misfire codes. BMW fuel systems rely on precise pressure and atomization, so even small blockages, electrical faults, or pump wear can trigger vibration and drivability loss.
What it feels like
Engine shaking at idle is the hallmark sign, sometimes worse when cold and improving as the engine warms. You may notice the vibration lessens or vanishes when you shift into Neutral, or it worsens under light acceleration or load. The shaking is felt through the steering wheel, seat, or dashboard. Rough idle, hesitation on takeoff, and a smell of unburned fuel are common companions. In some cases, one cylinder runs lean while others run normal, creating an unbalanced firing pattern that the driver feels as a rhythmic shake rather than a smooth hum.
How to confirm it
- Scan for misfire codes and fuel trim data using an OBD reader or BMW diagnostic tool. Misfire counters on a specific cylinder paired with positive fuel trims (engine trying to add fuel) point directly to injector or delivery trouble.
- Listen near the engine while idling and note whether all four or six injectors click at the same rate and tone. A dead or sluggish injector will sound different or silent compared to its neighbors.
- Measure fuel pressure at idle and under light throttle using a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail. BMW specs vary by model; consult your service manual. Low or unstable pressure suggests a pump or regulator fault.
- Inspect injector connectors and wiring for corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals. Wiggle the connectors gently while the engine idles and listen for any change in shaking or roughness, which would confirm an electrical contact issue.
- Compare cold-start vibration to warm-idle vibration. An intermittent injector fault often worsens when fuel is thick and cold, then stabilizes as the engine reaches operating temperature.
