Internal clutch pack wear occurs when the friction material inside the transmission's wet clutches breaks down or becomes glazed, reducing their ability to grip and transmit engine torque to the wheels. The result is engine revving without matching acceleration, typically worse under load or during gear changes. This failure is most common on higher-mileage transmissions or units that have run on degraded or low fluid. Other causes like low fluid level, contaminated transmission oil, or mechatronic control faults can produce similar symptoms, so fluid condition and electronic readings must be checked first.

What it feels like

The most obvious sign is a noticeable rise in engine RPM without a proportional increase in vehicle speed, especially during hard acceleration or when climbing a grade. You may feel a lag or hesitation when the transmission attempts to shift into a new gear, with the engine speeding up momentarily before the vehicle catches up. On some models, slip may occur only during specific upshifts (for example, third to fourth gear), which can help pinpoint which clutch circuit is worn. The problem often worsens when the transmission is cold or under sustained heavy load.

How to confirm it

  1. Check transmission fluid color and condition during a service. Dark, burnt, or metallic fluid with visible debris is a red flag; clutch material in the pan strongly suggests internal wear.
  2. Note precisely which gear or upshift triggers the slip. Does it happen consistently at the same RPM or load? This information helps distinguish clutch wear from other faults.
  3. Use a BMW-capable scan tool to read transmission fluid pressure and compare commanded shift timing against actual shift behavior. Low pressure or inability to hold commanded torque confirms internal loss of clamping force.
  4. If debris is found or pressure is low and cannot be restored by a fluid and filter change, the transmission requires internal inspection or overhaul.
