Internal radiator blockage occurs when corrosion, scale, or debris accumulates inside the radiator tubes, restricting coolant flow through the core. Some tubes run hot while others stay cold, and the engine overheats at idle or low speed even though coolant level appears normal. This condition mimics other cooling faults like thermostat sticking, water pump failure, or air pockets, so proper diagnosis matters before replacement.
What it feels like
The temperature gauge climbs toward red at stops or slow traffic, then drops once you accelerate or the fan ramps up. You may see steam from under the hood, smell coolant, or notice the radiator fan running constantly at high speed. The engine runs fine at highway speed where airflow is strong. In some cases, the radiator feels unevenly warm to the touch: hot sections near the inlet and cold sections downstream suggest partial blockage rather than a stuck thermostat.
How to confirm it
- Use an infrared thermometer or thermal camera to scan the radiator face while the engine idles at operating temperature. Look for cold spots across the core, especially the lower or outlet section. Even temperature from top to bottom rules out internal blockage.
- Allow the system to cool, then safely open the radiator cap and observe coolant flow if the radiator is removable or has a sight glass. Weak flow indicates blockage or circulation problems upstream.
- Perform a cooling system pressure test (13-15 psi for most BMW models) to rule out leaks before condemning the radiator. A pressure drop means the system is weeping coolant and losing heat rejection capacity.
- If flow remains restricted after a thorough flush with distilled water and coolant cleaner, the radiator core is damaged internally and requires replacement.
