A leaking injector seal occurs when the internal seals or injector body deteriorates, allowing fuel to seep into the combustion chamber or crankcase. This fault typically triggers a rich-running condition, fouled spark plugs, and a raw fuel smell. BMW forum members and service data consistently report this issue on turbocharged direct-injection engines, where cylinder-specific misfires and fuel-trim imbalances often point to a single faulty injector rather than a fuel-supply or electrical problem.

What it feels like

Symptoms depend on how much fuel escapes past the seal. A rough idle, especially at cold start, is common. You may notice a strong raw-fuel odor when the engine is off or shortly after shutdown, sometimes detectable from the tailpipe during acceleration. The engine runs noticeably rich, and the check engine light usually appears with cylinder-specific misfire or fuel-trim codes. Fouled spark plugs on the affected cylinder are a telltale sign. In some cases, fuel enters the oil, raising the oil level and creating a fuel smell in the crankcase.

How to confirm it

  1. Remove the spark plugs from all cylinders and inspect them visually. Fuel-wet or heavily coked plugs on one or two cylinders (rather than all four or six) point to a leaking injector, not a universal fuel-system fault.
  2. Smell the exhaust and check for a strong raw-fuel odor at cold start, during idle, or after the engine is shut down. A persistent fuel smell that does not fade within seconds suggests a leak.
  3. Connect a diagnostic scanner and monitor short-term and long-term fuel trims. A consistently rich condition (negative fuel trim) on one bank or cylinder narrows the problem to that specific injector.
  4. Inspect the fuel rail, injector body, and seal area for visible seepage or wetness after the engine has run and fuel pressure has built. Look at the injector tip and the connection point where it seats in the rail.
