A leaking radiator seam occurs when the bond between the plastic end tanks and the aluminum core fails, or when corrosion eats through the seam area. This type of leak often develops gradually and shows itself as pink or colored residue around the radiator corners and lower edges. Most BMW radiators fail at these high-stress seam points under normal operating pressure.
What it feels like
You will notice a pink or light-colored stain beneath the front of your car, usually after it has been parked for a few hours or overnight. The smell of sweet coolant becomes apparent in the engine bay. Coolant level drops noticeably over days or weeks, forcing frequent top-ups. You may see dried crusty residue at the radiator face, particularly along the bottom corners where gravity pools the leaking fluid. In some cases, the stain spreads wider than a single spot, indicating seepage from a long seam rather than a pinhole.
How to confirm it
- Park the car on a level surface and let the engine cool. Look closely at the radiator face and both end tanks, checking for wetness, white crusty deposits, or visible cracks in the plastic or seams.
- Inspect the lower corners of the radiator and trace upward along the plastic-to-core junction. Fresh pink coolant or old dried residue signals an active leak at that location.
- Run a cooling system pressure test using a hand pump or professional tester. Pressurize the system to 15-20 psi and watch the radiator seams and end tanks for new seepage or droplets forming.
- Check the radiator for impact damage, stone marks, or bent fins that could have opened a seam. Pay special attention to the front lower corners.

A leaking seam cannot be reliably patched; radiator replacement is the permanent fix. Choose a quality aluminum or OEM-equivalent unit matched to your model year and engine configuration.
