Leaking Shock Seal

A leaking shock seal occurs when the internal hydraulic seal fails, allowing damping fluid to escape from the shock or strut body. This typically appears as a wet or oily film on the exterior of the damper and signals the end of that unit's service life. On BMWs, a leaking shock often pairs with floaty handling, excessive bounce, or poor body control during cornering and braking.
What it feels like
The car may feel bouncy or slow to settle after bumps, especially noticeable on highway expansion joints or when braking into a turn. Steering can feel vague, and the chassis may wallow or lean excessively during cornering. Some owners report a clunking noise from the suspension, particularly over rough pavement. Tire wear may become uneven (cupping or scalloping) as the worn damper fails to control wheel motion. These symptoms worsen progressively as more fluid leaks out.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and visually inspect all four shock or strut bodies. Look for an oily film, wet residue, or fresh dripping fluid on the damper body itself.
- Compare the left and right shocks on the same axle. One unit will often be noticeably wetter than its pair if the seal has failed recently.
- During a road test, note whether the bounce or float correlates with the location of the wettest damper. Pay attention to how quickly the car settles after each bump.
- Confirm the fluid is coming from the damper and not from an adjacent source such as the axle, brake line, or power-steering unit. Wipe the shock body clean and recheck after a short drive.
