Low coolant or an air pocket in the cooling system stops heated coolant from reaching the heater core, leaving you with cold air from the vents even at full heat. This happens after a coolant service, a slow leak, or from a failed heater valve. The good news: it's fixable without engine work in most cases.

What it feels like

The blower motor runs normally and pushes air, but the air stays cold or barely warm no matter where you set the temperature dial. Sometimes one side blows warmer than the other if a blend door is stuck, but full cold output on all vents points to a coolant shortage or blockage. The problem gets worse or appears only after the engine warms up fully, and it may improve briefly on a cold start before returning.

How to confirm it

  1. Check the coolant level in the expansion tank when the engine is cold. The level should reach the minimum mark on the side of the tank. Top it up with the correct BMW coolant if low.
  2. Look for visible leaks around hoses, hose clamps, the expansion tank itself, the water pump area, and all connection points. Wet spots, crusty deposits, or puddles under the car mean a leak that will cause coolant loss over time.
  3. Bleed the cooling system using the BMW procedure for your model (E30, E36, E46, F-series, or G-series all differ slightly). This removes trapped air pockets that starve the heater core.
  4. Take a full warm-up drive at highway speeds for at least 10 minutes after refilling and bleeding, then recheck heater output. Air pockets sometimes take a few heat cycles to clear.
