Outer CV joint wear develops gradually as the constant-velocity joint's internal ball bearings and races lose their precision fit. Worn joints bind and release under load, producing a repetitive clicking noise most obvious during low-speed turns or acceleration in a curve. This failure is one of the most common driveline complaints in BMWs and typically signals that the axle assembly needs replacement before complete joint failure causes loss of drive.
What it feels like
A worn outer CV joint creates a rhythmic clicking or popping sound that intensifies when turning while accelerating. The noise is most pronounced at low speeds in tight turns, such as parking lot maneuvers or hairpin curves. The clicking may be louder on one side depending on which joint is worn and which direction you turn. Some drivers report the noise as audible from inside the cabin and especially noticeable when the steering wheel is near full lock. Unlike other driveline problems, a CV joint click is almost always tied to turning under load rather than straight-line acceleration.
How to confirm it
- Drive into a parking lot and execute slow, tight circular turns in both directions. Listen carefully for a rhythmic clicking that speeds up as you accelerate through the turn.
- Turn left in a tight circle, then reverse direction and turn right. Note whether the clicking gets louder on the outside wheel under load, and whether one side is significantly worse than the other.
- Lift the vehicle on a jack and grab the axle firmly by the rubber boot area. Rotate the wheel slowly by hand and feel for roughness, notching, or grinding sensations in the joint. A healthy CV joint rotates smoothly without catching.
- Inspect both CV boots (rubber accordion covers) along the entire length of each axle. Look for splits, grease spray on the inside of the wheel, or missing metal clamps. A torn boot allows grease to escape and dirt to enter, accelerating wear.
