Pad or Rotor Glazing

Pad or rotor glazing occurs when brake friction material overheats and hardens into a smooth, shiny surface that loses grip. This commonly happens after repeated hard braking, towing, aggressive driving, or sustained mountain descents. The glazed layer squeals during normal braking but does not reduce stopping power immediately. However, glazing can mask underlying wear or hardware issues, so it must be inspected rather than ignored.
What it feels like
You will hear a high-pitched squeal during light to moderate braking, especially when the brakes are cold. The sound is consistent and vibration-like rather than grinding or metal-on-metal noise. Braking feel may seem normal at first, but glazed pads often deliver reduced initial bite followed by adequate stopping once heat builds up. If the squeal is paired with grinding, pulling to one side, vibration through the pedal, or a brake warning light, those are signs of more serious wear or hardware failure and must be inspected immediately.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and remove the wheels. Visually inspect both front and rear brake pads and rotors for a glossy, mirror-like or polished finish rather than a dull, slightly textured surface.
- Note whether the squealing began after a specific event: hard braking, trailer towing, mountain driving, or spirited acceleration and downshifting.
- During your next gentle drive, feel the brake pedal for consistent response and firm bite. Check that the car stops straight without pulling and that pedal height does not drop or feel spongy.
- If glazing is visually confirmed and braking feel is normal with no warning lights, the pads and rotors can often be cleaned or resurfaced. If bite is soft or inconsistent, replacement is safer and more reliable.
