Radiator Seam or End Tank Crack

BMW radiators fail at seams and plastic end tanks as the components age and become brittle. Coolant leaks typically appear at the radiator corners, drain area, or where hoses connect. Small cracks may only open under pressure, leaving white mineral residue or wet spots on the front of the engine bay. The leak can be slow enough to go unnoticed for weeks or develop suddenly after the engine warms up.
What it feels like
You may notice coolant dripping underneath the car after parking, a sweet smell near the engine bay, or visible green, orange, or pink fluid pooling on the ground. The dashboard coolant warning light may illuminate, or coolant level drops noticeably between service intervals. On some BMWs, the leak is intermittent and only occurs when the engine is fully warm and pressure builds. You might spot white crusty deposits or dried coolant stains on the radiator itself, fan shroud, or lower splash shield.
How to confirm it
- Inspect the radiator seams, plastic end tanks, and drain plug area for dampness, white residue, or active seepage while the engine is cold.
- Perform a cooling system pressure test using a hand pump or shop tester, then watch the radiator corners and hose connection necks for seepage patterns.
- Park the vehicle overnight on a clean surface and check for drips the next morning to pinpoint the leak location.
- Use an inspection mirror to examine hidden seam areas behind the fan shroud and upper radiator support.
