Rich overrun fueling happens when too much unburned fuel reaches the exhaust during deceleration and ignites there, producing pops and crackles. This is typically an exhaust afterfire rather than an intake backfire. The root cause is usually excess fuel being held in the combustion chamber on throttle closure, faulty fuel injectors, or aftermarket ECU tuning calibrated to deliberately keep fuel enrichment during overrun for the popping effect.
What it feels like
You'll hear sharp pops, cracks, or burbles from the exhaust when lifting off the throttle or braking, especially during downshifts. The pops may be loud and frequent, sometimes accompanied by visible flame in the exhaust on overcast days. Many owners notice the exhaust smells distinctly rich or fuel-like during these events. On some tuned vehicles the popping is mild and intentional; on others it signals a real fueling problem. The car itself drives normally under acceleration and cruise, so drivability under load is not impaired.
How to confirm it
- Check your vehicle's ECU tuning history. If an aftermarket tune, burble tune, or piggyback module is installed, confirm whether overrun fueling enrichment is enabled in the calibration.
- Inspect all spark plugs for heavy soot deposits or fuel fouling, which indicates the mixture is running too rich on overrun.
- Use a diagnostic scanner to monitor live fuel injector pulse width, short and long-term fuel trims, and decel fuel cut behavior. Compare against stock values for your engine code if available.
- Smell the exhaust carefully during deceleration. A strong unburned-fuel odor confirms excess fuel is reaching the exhaust chamber.
- If tuned, revert to the stock calibration for one drive cycle. If popping stops, the tune is the cause; if it persists, injector or fuel pressure faults are likely involved.
