Road impact damage covers any event where the tire strikes a pothole, curb, sharp debris, or road hazard hard enough to damage the carcass or sidewall. It shows up as an immediate blowout in the worst cases, but more often the tire looks fine from the outside while internal structure has already failed. The damage can take hours or days to present as a bulge, slow pressure loss, or sudden rupture at highway speed.

01

What it feels like

Right after the impact, you may hear a loud thud or feel a sharp jolt through the steering wheel. The car can pull hard to one side if pressure drops quickly. A bulge or bubble on the sidewall is a clear sign, and the tire may hiss or lose pressure gradually rather than all at once. Vibration at speed, a thumping rhythm from one corner, or the TPMS warning light coming on after an impact all point to impact damage. Run-flat tires can mask these sensations because the sidewall holds the car up even with zero pressure.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Demount and inspect the interior. After any pothole, curb strike, or debris hit, have the tire removed from the wheel and inspect the inside for cuts, cord exposure, bruising, and sidewall separation. Exterior inspection alone is not enough because internal damage is often invisible from outside.
  2. Check for bulges, bubbles, or sidewall cuts. Run your hand around the full circumference of the sidewall and tread. Any bulge or bubble means internal separation has already occurred. Replace the tire immediately; bulges cannot be repaired.
  3. Check and log inflation pressure. Compare the measured pressure against the vehicle door placard spec. Repeated pressure loss after an impact confirms structural damage. Underinflation before impact also increases the chance of carcass failure, so note whether pressure was low at the time of the strike.
  4. For run-flat tires, check distance and speed after pressure loss. BMW and OEM run-flat guidance limits post-pressure-loss driving to no more than 50 miles at up to 50 mph. If that window was exceeded, internal damage is more likely even if the tire still holds some air.
  5. Inspect the wheel and suspension. A hard enough impact to damage a tire can also bend the rim or affect alignment geometry. Check for wheel runout, obvious rim deformation, and unusual steering pull or vibration that persists after a tire swap.

Parts that fix it

Replacement wheels are needed when the impact has bent or cracked the rim along with damaging the tire. The options below cover common BMW fitments across E-series and G-series platforms.

Neuspeed RSf72 - 20x9 Wheel Set for BMW Square Fitment by Neuspeed - $3356. A forged square-fitment set that replaces impact-damaged OEM wheels with a stronger, lighter alternative suited to daily and performance use.

BMW OEM Style 252 Radial Spoke Forged Wheels 19" - F10/F07/F01 by EuroActive - $3199.95. A direct OEM-style forged replacement for F10, F07, and F01 owners who need to swap out a bent or cracked wheel after an impact.

EuroActive BMW 5 & 6 Series 20" Style 356 Staggered Alloy Wheel Set of 4 by EuroActive - $2849.95. Staggered set for BMW 5 and 6 Series that addresses impact damage to all four corners with OEM-spec sizing.

What else to check

Not every blowout or pressure loss traces back to impact damage. Tires that are chronically underinflated build up heat that degrades the carcass independently of any pothole. Age and UV cracking cause sidewall failures in tires older than six years regardless of tread depth. A valve stem or TPMS sensor leak can mimic slow impact-related pressure loss. Overloading the vehicle beyond the tire's load rating is another cause that has nothing to do with road hazards but produces similar structural failures.
