Strut mounts, shock absorbers, and their top bearings wear over time and fail under compression or steering load. When they go bad, the top of the strut assembly loses rigidity, allowing metal-to-metal contact or bearing play. On BMW suspensions this shows up as a sharp clunk during small bumps, hard turning, or braking loads. The noise often comes from the top strut tower area and can be mistaken for loose hardware or control arm problems.

01

What it feels like

A clunking sound near the front end when hitting a pothole or driveway edge is the classic sign. You may hear it on tight turns, especially at parking-lot speeds. The clunk can be single or repeated depending on suspension movement. Some owners describe it as a hollow knock from the top of the engine bay, distinct from a rattle. The noise may get worse when one side of the car is loaded (with weight on a passenger seat, for example) or during hard braking that compresses the front end.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Visually inspect the top strut mounts on both sides of the engine bay. Look for torn rubber, cracked bearing plates, or oil weeping from the shock body itself.
  2. Turn the steering wheel all the way left and right while parked and listening near the top strut tower for any clunks or creaking from the top mount.
  3. Drive slowly over a small bump or driveway lip and note if the clunk occurs immediately on impact. Also listen for changes in the noise during gentle braking.
  4. If a strut was recently replaced or serviced, verify the top nut and all mount hardware are torqued to spec and not loose.
