On turbocharged BMWs, the oil feed and return lines that supply and drain oil from the turbocharger can develop leaks at fittings, hose connections, or banjo-style bolts. When these lines weep or crack, hot oil drips onto the exhaust manifold or downpipe and burns off, creating visible smoke. This is a common failure point because the lines sit in tight engine bays where heat-soak occurs after shutdown, thinning the oil and increasing drip rate.

What it feels like

You'll notice blue or gray smoke coming from under the hood, especially a few minutes after shutting down the engine when heat soak is highest. The smell is acrid and oily, distinct from coolant or fuel odors. There may be no performance loss or warning lights, but you might spot fresh oil residue on the turbo housing, downpipe, or exhaust components during inspection. On some vehicles the leak worsens in stop-and-go driving where the turbo runs hot and then cools quickly.

How to confirm it

  1. Inspect the turbo oil feed line (inlet) and return line (outlet) for wet fittings, visible seepage at banjo bolt connections, or small cracks in rubber hose sections. Pay close attention to where lines crimp or connect to metal fittings.
  2. After a short 10-15 minute drive, park safely and look under the turbo and above the downpipe for fresh oil drops or wet residue. Do not touch hot components.
  3. Check the area again 30 minutes after shutdown when heat soak is at peak. Leaks often worsen during this window because thinned oil drips faster.
  4. Confirm no oil is pooled on the exhaust manifold or stuck to the downpipe heat shield. This rules out other top-end sources like the valve cover gasket.

Parts that fix it

Replacement turbo oil feed and return line kits are the primary fix. Heat shields can reduce ambient temperature around the lines but do not repair the leak itself.
