Wheel Imbalance

Wheel imbalance occurs when a wheel and tire assembly has uneven weight distribution around its circumference. This is one of the most common causes of steering wheel vibration, especially noticeable at highway speeds between 40 and 70 mph. Missing balance weights, tire damage, or mud and ice buildup can all throw a wheel out of balance. The vibration typically worsens as speed increases within a narrow range and may improve or disappear outside that range.
What it feels like
You will feel a steady vibration transmitted through the steering wheel, most pronounced at certain highway speeds. The shimmy may be mild at first but grows stronger as you accelerate through the problem speed range, then may ease off at higher speeds. Some drivers report the vibration also being felt in the seat or floorboard, depending on which wheels are imbalanced. Unlike vibration during braking, which points to rotor or caliper issues, highway speed vibration centered in the steering wheel is the classic imbalance signature.
How to confirm it
- Drive the vehicle on a smooth highway at the speed where vibration is strongest. Note the exact speed range and whether the vibration is tied to a narrow band (typically 5 to 10 mph wide). This consistency points to wheel imbalance rather than suspension or driveline issues.
- Park safely and inspect all four wheels and tires for missing balance weights, mud or ice caked onto the inside rim, flat spots, bulges, or uneven tread wear. Even small deposits of mud behind the wheel can throw balance off.
- Have all four wheel and tire assemblies dynamically balanced at a tire shop using a balancing machine. Request that the shop check for bent rims or out-of-round tires during the process.
- After balancing, take a test drive at the same speeds where you felt vibration. If the steering wheel is now smooth, imbalance was the cause. If vibration persists, move on to front suspension inspection.
Parts that fix it
If balancing does not resolve the vibration or your wheels are damaged beyond repair, replacement wheel sets are available for most BMW models. Select a set that matches your vehicle's bolt pattern and fitment.
