A wheel imbalance or bent rim triggers violent vibration and shake, usually felt most at highway speed. This condition often appears after tire service, hitting a pothole, or curb damage. On a BMW, the shake typically starts in the steering wheel and can feel severe enough to be alarming. Unlike suspension or steering problems that worsen gradually, wheel imbalance usually arrives suddenly and is tied to a recent impact or tire work.

01

What it feels like

You'll notice a noticeable shimmy or oscillation in the steering wheel, front end, or entire cabin when driving above 40 mph. The vibration may intensify at specific speeds (often between 55 and 75 mph) and can feel like the vehicle is being shaken side to side. If the bent rim is severe or the imbalance pronounced, the shake may be strong enough to blur dashboard gauges or make it hard to read instruments. The vibration usually stops or decreases when you slow down below 40 mph. Some owners describe it as "death wobble," though on a BMW this is almost always wheel or tire related rather than a suspension geometry issue.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Inspect all four wheels for visible damage. Look for bent rims, flat spots on the rim edge, missing or loose wheel weights, and cracks or bulges in the tire sidewall.
  2. Rotate the front wheels to the rear axle and take a road test at highway speed. If the vibration moves to the rear or disappears, the cause is front wheel imbalance or damage.
  3. Have all four tires balanced on a road-force or dynamic balancer at a tire shop. This machine spins the tire and wheel as an assembly and detects both static imbalance and radial runout.
  4. If balance checks normal, have a technician measure wheel runout with a dial indicator. Runout over 3 mm (0.12 inch) typically means the rim is bent and should be replaced.
