The anti-roll bar link bushings are rubber components that connect your sway bar to the suspension knuckle. They wear quickly on rough roads and fail faster than front control arm bushings. When they deteriorate, you hear clunking over bumps and during cornering. This is a secondary but common source of front suspension noise in BMWs.

01

What it feels like

You will notice a metallic clunk or rattling noise when driving over potholes, speed bumps, or rough pavement. The noise is most obvious during sharp turns, especially at low speeds. The clunking intensifies as the bushing loses its grip and the sway bar link develops play. You may also feel subtle steering column movement or hear the noise through the chassis floor. Handling feels slightly looser during cornering compared to a tight, responsive BMW.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Drive over a bumpy road surface or into a parking lot pothole and listen carefully for a sharp metallic clunk from the front suspension area.
  2. Turn the steering wheel fully left and right at low speed while listening for clunking noises that sync with the direction change.
  3. Park safely and manually grab each sway bar link at the connection point where it meets the suspension knuckle. Rock it up and down to check for vertical play or looseness in the joint.
  4. Inspect the rubber bushing around the link for cracks, tears, or separation from the metal sleeve. Black crumbled rubber or visible wear indicates failure.
  5. Verify the strut tower brace mounting nuts are tight, as loose hardware can mimic sway bar link noise.
