Worn Control Arm Bushings

Worn control arm bushings are rubber and metal components that connect the front suspension control arms to the frame. When these bushings crack, tear, or leak fluid, the arm can move excessively, producing clunking or knocking sounds over bumps and during braking. This is one of the most common sources of front suspension noise on BMW vehicles and often comes with steering shimmy or vibration at highway speeds.
What it feels like
You'll typically hear a clunk or knock from the front suspension when driving over small to medium bumps, speed humps, or potholes. The noise is often louder during light braking at 40-60 mph, especially when the suspension is under load. Some owners report a rattling or clunking sound that gets worse as the bushings deteriorate further. In addition to noise, you may feel a slight shimmy in the steering wheel or notice the front end feels less stable when cornering, since the worn bushing allows the arm to shift position slightly during turns and braking.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and visually inspect the inboard bushing on the front control arm for cracks, tears, missing rubber, or any fluid leakage around the joint.
- Using a pry bar, gently move the control arm up and down along its axis of travel (or have an assistant do so). Check for excess movement or play compared to the opposite side.
- Take the car on a short road test over low-speed bumps and during light braking to confirm the noise reproduces and matches what you observed during initial inspection.
- Compare both front sides visually for unequal rubber deterioration, cracks, or bulging, which indicates uneven bushing wear.
