Worn Front Control-Arm Bushings

Worn front control-arm bushings are rubber or polyurethane components that secure the control arm to the frame and allow controlled movement. When they wear, tear, or split, the control arm develops excess play. This lets the hard metal parts shift and make contact under steering load, creating a clunk that usually gets worse at low speed while turning or during braking turns.
What it feels like
You hear a single clunk or knock from the front end when steering at low speed, especially when turning into a parking space or making tight turns. The noise may get louder when you brake while turning. Steering feel can become vague or less responsive. On some BMWs, the clunk happens mainly during acceleration in a turn, though that pattern more often points to CV joints on xDrive models. The sound is metallic and comes from the suspension area, not the engine or transmission.
How to confirm it
- Raise the front of the car on jack stands and visually inspect both front control-arm bushings. Look for cracks, tears, fluid seepage, or visible rubber degradation.
- Use a pry bar to apply upward and downward force on the control arm near the bushing. Excessive fore-aft or vertical play that moves freely before hitting a stop points to worn bushings.
- Have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you watch the control arm. Worn bushings let the arm shift noticeably with minimal resistance.
- Check if the noise is worse under braking while turning, which typically indicates thrust arm bushing wear rather than other suspension parts.
- If work was done recently, verify that all suspension fasteners are torqued to spec, as loose bolts can mimic bushing wear.
