Worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils cause ignition misfires that disrupt combustion at idle, where engine speed is too low to mask combustion faults. One or more cylinders may not fire reliably, especially when the engine is cold or under load. This fault shows up as rough idle, hesitation, and sometimes a check engine light with misfire codes. Ignition wear is one of the most common rough idle causes on BMW, though vacuum leaks and fuel system faults often occur at the same time.

01

What it feels like

The engine shakes or vibrates noticeably at a stop sign or traffic light, sometimes bad enough to rock the car. Idle speed may drop below normal, around 400-600 rpm instead of the target 700-800 rpm. Some drivers report a hesitation or stumble when accelerating from a stop. The shaking is usually worse when the engine is cold or when the air conditioner compressor kicks in. You may see a check engine light, often with a P0300 (random misfire) or cylinder-specific code like P0301 (cylinder 1 misfire).

02

How to confirm it

  1. Connect a BMW scanner or generic OBD2 scanner and pull live misfire counts. Pay attention to which cylinders show repeat misfires. If one coil pack or spark plug is bad, misfires will cluster on that cylinder.
  2. Inspect spark plugs visually. Look for heavy carbon buildup, oil fouling, excessive wear, or a gap wider than specification (typically 0.028 to 0.032 inch for BMW). Swap plugs from problem cylinders with known-good ones from another cylinder and retest.
  3. Check ignition coil boot condition. Cracks, corrosion, or carbon tracking on the coil connectors will cause weak spark. Swap coil packs between cylinders to see if the misfire follows the coil or stays on the same cylinder.
  4. Compare cylinder compression and spark quality across all cylinders using a compression tester and spark plug tester, if available. A weak spark or low compression will reveal which cylinder is at fault.
