A worn strut mount bearing allows the upper strut to bind or move with a clunk or knock when the wheel is turned or the suspension articulates. This is a common source of front-end noise on BMW models, particularly noticeable during low-speed steering input, parking lot maneuvers, or while driving over bumps. The bearing sits at the top of the strut tower and connects the strut rod to the chassis; wear here causes play that creates audible noise and can affect steering feel.

What it feels like

You hear a clunk or knock from the front end, typically worse when turning the steering wheel slowly at low speed or while parked. The noise may also occur when the suspension compresses over bumps or dips in the road. Some drivers report a binding sensation or resistance in the steering column, as if the wheel does not turn as smoothly as it should. The symptom is often louder on the side where the bearing is worn. Unlike sway bar link noise, which is sharper and more metallic over bumps, strut mount bearing wear tends to produce a duller clunk during steering input.

How to confirm it

  1. Turn the steering wheel slowly while parked and listen carefully at the top of each strut tower for a clunk or binding noise. Compare left and right sides.
  2. Visually inspect the upper strut mount area for visible play, cracks, or worn rubber. Look for any lateral movement in the bearing when you gently push on the strut rod by hand.
  3. Lift the vehicle on a jack and check whether the noise or movement changes with load removed from the suspension. Grasp the top of the strut and try to move it side to side to feel for play.
  4. Rule out sway bar links and control-arm bushings by noting when the noise occurs. Strut mount bearing wear is most pronounced during steering input; if noise is mainly over bumps, check the sway bar links first.
