Worn suspension bushings allow excessive movement between suspension components and the frame. On BMW models, degraded control arm, tension strut, or thrust arm bushings commonly trigger a highway-speed shimmy or vibration, particularly in the 60-70 mph range. The symptom typically worsens with age and mileage as rubber hardens and cracks.

01

What it feels like

A vibration that appears or gets worse at highway speeds, usually between 50-80 mph. You may feel it in the steering wheel, seat, or floor depending on which bushings are worn. Front control arm bushings tend to cause steering-wheel shimmy, while rear differential and subframe bushings produce a wobble felt more through the seat. The vibration often tracks vehicle speed rather than engine RPM, and may change character during light throttle, steady cruise, or coasting.

How to confirm it

  1. Lift the front end on a jack and inspect the control arm, tension strut, and thrust arm bushings visually. Look for cracks in the rubber, separation of rubber from the metal sleeve, or visible movement when you move the component by hand.
  2. With the car lifted, grasp the control arm and use a pry bar to load the bushing. Excessive play or a clunking noise signals wear. Repeat this test on all front bushings.
  3. If vibration feels centered in the seat rather than the steering wheel, also check rear subframe and differential mounting bushings using the same pry-bar method.
  4. Drive the car at varied speeds and engine loads. Note whether the vibration changes during light acceleration, steady cruise, or deceleration. Worn bushings often feel worse under load or during throttle transitions.
