The G70 7 Series: BMW's Most Ambitious Flagship Yet

If you thought the F01 was a statement and the G11 pushed boundaries, the G70 7 Series is BMW playing an entirely different game. Launched for the 2023 model year, the G70 represents the most technologically dense, architecturally complex flagship BMW has ever put on American roads. We're talking a platform that simultaneously supports a twin-turbocharged straight-six, a twin-turbo V8, a plug-in hybrid system, and the fully electric i7 xDrive60 - all sharing the same CLAR-evolved architecture. For the Bimmer faithful who've been following this marque through the E38 golden era and into the modern age, the G70 is simultaneously exciting and humbling. There's a lot going on under that bold, polarizing snout.

The standard 740i runs BMW's B58 straight-six in updated B58B30T1 tune, pushing 375 horsepower from the factory. If you've spent any time around the Supra or Z4 crowd, you already know this engine is an absolute gem. It's not the raw, spooled aggression of the N54 that built a generation of tuners, but the B58 is arguably more refined, more reliable out of the box, and still very receptive to bolt-ons and a proper tune. The 760i xDrive steps things up considerably with the S68 twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 - 536 horsepower in stock trim - sharing its DNA with the M5 and X5 M Competition. That engine is genuinely ferocious and, frankly, underrated in the tuning community right now simply because the G70 is still so new. Expect the aftermarket to catch up fast. The 750e xDrive PHEV combines that B58 with an electric motor for a combined 483 horsepower and real-world EV range around 40 miles - useful for HOV lane access and daily commuting, less useful if you're chasing peak power numbers on a dyno.

Weak Points, Priority Upgrades, and Where to Start

Let's be honest: the G70 is a fresh platform, so the community is still cataloging gremlins in real time. That said, a few priority areas are already becoming clear. First, the air suspension - standard on most trims - is capable and comfortable, but enthusiasts who want sharper turn-in and more communicative feedback are already looking toward Suspension upgrades, particularly aftermarket coilover solutions and sport-tuned air management systems from brands like KW and Bilstein. The stock setup is tuned firmly toward passenger comfort, which is exactly right for the rear-seat executive crowd but leaves a little to be desired if you're the one actually driving. Second, for the 740i crowd specifically, the factory intake and exhaust are notably conservative. A high-flow intake combined with a quality catback or downpipe-back system from the brands we stock in our Exhaust section will wake up the B58 meaningfully, both in sound character and throttle response. The G70 in stock form is almost too quiet - it deserves to announce itself a little more.

On the Engine side, the B58 tune scene is well-developed thanks to years of work on the G20 3 Series and G22 4 Series. MHD, BM3, and Bootmod3 are all producing strong maps for the G70's B58, and supporting mods - upgraded charge pipes, an intercooler, and a quality fuel pump upgrade - are well understood at this point. For the S68-powered 760i, we're in earlier days, but the M division engine's proven architecture means the tuning ceiling is very high. Expect Stage 1 software alone to push well past 600 horsepower on that platform as calibrators accumulate more data.

Wheel fitment deserves its own conversation. The G70 rides on a massive footprint, and the factory 20-inch and optional 21-inch setups leave real room to personalize. Check out our Wheels & Tires section for staggered fitment options that work with the xDrive geometry - this is not the car to cheap out on wheel specs, given the chassis weight and the stress placed on contact patches under hard acceleration. Brands like BBS, HRE, and Vossen have already developed G70-specific fitment data.

For exterior work, the G70's dramatic new design language - love it or hate it - actually responds very well to subtle aero refinements. A lip kit, side skirt extensions, or a trunk spoiler can tighten up the visual proportions considerably without going full M Sport bodykit. Browse the Body & Aero catalog for options that complement rather than fight the factory design intent. 3D Design and Kelleners Sport have early offerings worth considering.

Trusted Brands and Mod Paths for Daily vs. Enthusiast Use

For a daily-driven G70 - and realistically, most of these cars will live that life - the priority mod path is straightforward: a proper tune, intake, and catback exhaust for the B58 or S68, KW or Bilstein sport suspension, and a wheel upgrade that drops unsprung weight without sacrificing ride quality on broken American pavement. That combination transforms the car without touching its long-distance touring excellence. For the owner who wants to explore more aggressive driving on track days or canyon roads, adding a front strut brace, upgraded brake pads and fluid, and stickier performance tires in the factory sizes is the logical next step. Brands we trust consistently on this platform include KW, Dinan, Akrapovič, BMS, and Bootmod3 for software. The G70 is only at the beginning of its tuning life cycle - the best builds are still being mapped out - but the foundation here is strong, and if BMW's recent platform history is any guide, this one will reward the enthusiasts who get in early.
