The BMW 8 Series - Grand Touring Performance at Its Finest
The BMW 8 Series has always represented something special in the Bimmer world - a flagship grand tourer that blends aggressive styling with serious performance credentials. Whether you're talking about the iconic E31 that turned heads in the early '90s or the modern G15 coupe sitting in your garage today, the 8 Series has never been a car for the timid. This is BMW's statement piece, the model that says the brand can compete with Ferrari and Bentley on the grand touring stage while still delivering that unmistakable driving character enthusiasts have loved for decades.
The original E31 (1991-1997) built the legend. Powered by the S70 V12 in the 850CSi or the M60/M62 V8 in the 840Ci, the E31 was an engineering showcase that was arguably ahead of its time. BMW brought the nameplate back in 2019 with the G14 convertible, the G15 coupe, and eventually the G16 Gran Coupe in 2020, giving enthusiasts a whole new platform to work with and a fresh reason to open their wallets at the parts counter.
Engines, Tuning Potential, and What the Aftermarket Has to Offer
When it comes to tuning, the modern 8 Series is where things get really exciting. The B58 inline-six found in the 840i is one of the most tuner-friendly engines BMW has produced in years - a simple ECU tune and some bolt-ons can push output well past 400 horsepower without breaking a sweat. The real monster, though, is the S63 twin-turbo V8 sitting under the hood of the M850i and the full M8. The S63 responds beautifully to ECU tuning, upgraded downpipes, and charge pipe kits, with supporting mods easily getting you into the 650-700whp range on a healthy build. The E31 crowd sticks to carbureted and early EFI tuning, custom exhaust fabrication, and suspension refreshes - the 850CSi V12 in particular is a cult favorite that rewards patient builders.
For the G-chassis 8 Series owner, the aftermarket is growing fast. Exhaust upgrades are the most popular first mod - catted and catless downpipes paired with a performance axle-back system transform the sound of both the B58 and S63 from muted luxury note to something genuinely aggressive. Carbon fiber aero packages including front lip spoilers, side skirts, and rear diffusers are huge sellers for the G14, G15, and G16, since these cars already have stunning lines that reward tasteful aerodynamic additions. Forged wheel fitments in staggered setups are extremely popular, with most builders targeting a subtle widened stance without going full aggressive tuck.
Suspension work on the modern 8 Series typically starts with coilover or air suspension upgrades to bring the ride height down and sharpen the handling response. BMW's stock adaptive suspension is competent but leaves room on the table, and a quality coilover kit transforms these big coupes into something much more responsive through corners without destroying ride quality on long highway runs - which matters on a car built for eating miles. Brake upgrades including big brake kits are also a logical step once tuners start making serious power, especially on M8 builds tracking the car.
Why the 8 Series Community Keeps Growing
The 8 Series attracts a specific type of Bimmer owner - someone who wants genuine luxury and genuine performance without having to choose between them. The aftermarket loves this platform because the bones are exceptional. BMW built these cars with real performance intent from the factory, which means modifications build on a strong foundation rather than fighting against engineering compromises. The E31 has a dedicated restoration and restomod community that continues to grow as values rise and parts suppliers catch up with demand. The G-chassis cars are only getting more popular as the model matures and more owners start looking beyond the dealer service drive for ways to personalize and upgrade their investment. If you own an 8 Series, you already know you picked the right car - now it is time to make it yours.
