The Last Naturally Aspirated M3: Why the E90 Still Matters
The E90 M3 occupies a singular place in BMW history - it's the only sedan to ever wear the E9x M3 badge, and it shares its bones with what many enthusiasts consider the greatest M3 generation ever built. Produced from 2008 through 2011, the E90 gives you four doors wrapped around the same S65B40 V8 that powers the E92 coupe and E93 convertible. That 4.0-liter high-revving naturally aspirated unit produces 414 horsepower from the factory and screams to a 8,400 RPM redline in a way that no turbocharged M car since has been able to replicate. If you've driven one to the rev limiter, you already know. If you haven't, that's what we're here to help you build toward.
The S65 is fundamentally a de-stroked version of the F1-derived S85 V10 from the E60 M5, and it shows. Individual throttle bodies, a high compression ratio, and a free-breathing design mean this engine rewards bolt-ons and a thoughtful tune in a way that feels visceral and immediate. There's no turbo lag to mask, no boost threshold to work around - just pure mechanical response. The E90 chassis code makes this body style relatively rare compared to the E92 coupe, which means clean examples are appreciating, and modding a well-sorted sedan for track duty is one of the smartest plays in the used M car market right now.
Know Your Weak Points Before You Spend a Dollar on Mods
Before you start building, you need to understand where the S65 is vulnerable. The rod bearings are the headline issue - this is not optional reading. The S65 shares the same bearing material concerns as the S85, and if you're buying used, an inspection or preemptive replacement is the first thing on the list. ACL or King bearings are the community standard here, and most shops familiar with M cars will quote you a reasonable job if you supply the parts. Skipping this on a high-mileage E90 M3 and then adding power is how you turn a performance build into an engine rebuild. Check the engine internals section for everything you need to do this job right.
The throttle actuator and VANOS system are the next items worth watching. Throttle actuator failures on the S65 are well-documented - the sub-throttles can stick or fail, triggering limp mode at the worst possible time. Rebuilt units from reputable suppliers are available, but if you're pushing the car hard on track, having a spare or fresh unit is cheap insurance. VANOS solenoids should be cleaned or replaced as part of any serious service interval, and you'll find quality options in our VANOS components category. The cooling system also deserves attention early: the expansion tank, water pump, and thermostat are known failure points as mileage climbs. Swap the plastic thermostat housing and run a quality 80-degree thermostat if you're tracking the car regularly. Browse our full lineup in the cooling system section.
Differential fluid is chronically neglected on these cars. The limited-slip differential responds dramatically to a fresh fluid service - grab a quality 75W-90 synthetic and do it if you don't have documentation it's been done. You'll feel the difference on corner exit immediately.
Building the E90 M3: Daily, Weekend, and Full Track
The E90 M3's mod path divides pretty cleanly based on how you use the car. For a spirited daily driver, the community consensus starts with an aftermarket exhaust - Eisenmann and Akrapovič titanium systems are perennial favorites that free up the S65's top-end breathing while making that V8 howl embarrassingly good. Pair that with an aggressive ECU tune through MHD or a custom map from one of the established S65 tuners, and you've added real seat-of-the-pants response without compromising daily driveability. Upgraded brake pads from our brake pads category - Hawk HPS or Pagid RS for the street - handle the extra confidence quickly.
For a weekend warrior build, suspension is where the real gains live. Coilovers from KW, Ohlins Road and Track, or BC Racing give you proper damping control without the harshness of a dedicated race setup. Add camber plates, get an alignment dialed in, and pair with a quality front strut brace to tighten up the chassis. An aftermarket subframe reinforcement kit is worth doing at this stage if you're pushing the car - the factory rear subframe mounting points are a known long-term stress area under repeated hard driving. Find your suspension setup in the suspension components section.
Full track builds on the E90 are where this platform really earns its reputation. A proper cage or bolt-in roll bar, Recaro or Sparco seating, a quality harness, and race-compound rubber on a set of dedicated track wheels transforms the E90 into something that embarrasses a lot of newer iron. On the braking side, step up to Brembo GT or StopTech Trophy big brake kits and move to a purpose-built fluid like Motul RBF 660. The S65's naturally aspirated character means consistent power delivery through corners without heat soak concerns that plague turbocharged builds at the limit.
The E90 M3 is a sedan that drives like a sports car, sounds like a race car, and appreciates like a collectable. Build it right, maintain the bearings and cooling, and this chassis will reward you for as long as you want to drive it hard.
