BrowseThe G29 Z4: BMW's Most Driver-Focused Roadster in a Generation
The BMW Z4 G29 arrived in 2019 carrying a lot of expectations - and for the most part, it delivered. Co-developed with Toyota (the Supra A90 shares its platform), this third-generation Z4 marked a genuine return to form for BMW's open-top roadster. Where the previous F23-based Z4 felt a little soft around the edges, the G29 is sharper, more communicative, and - depending on which engine sits under that long hood - genuinely quick. If you've been sleeping on this platform, it's time to wake up.
The G29 ditched the old retractable hardtop in favor of a proper fabric soft-top, shedding weight and bringing back that classic roadster feel. Chassis rigidity is exceptional for a convertible, the steering has real weight to it, and the suspension tune - especially on the M40i - is aggressive enough to keep enthusiasts happy without needing to reach for the parts catalog on day one. That said, we know you're here because you want to build something, and this platform has plenty of room to grow.
Engine Options and Modding Potential
In the US market, you're working with two powerplants. The sDrive30i runs BMW's B48 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, making 255 horsepower stock. It's a smooth, efficient engine with a solid tuning foundation - don't let the four-pot badge fool you. A quality tune, upgraded intercooler, and intake will push it well past 300whp without touching internals. If you're coming from the N54 crowd, the B48 tunes differently - it's more refined out of the box but responds extremely well to bolt-ons stacked with a flash tune.
The real headliner is the M40i, equipped with the B58 3.0L inline-six. This engine is arguably the best turbocharged six BMW has built in the modern era - a spiritual successor to the N55, but more capable and better engineered from the factory. Stock figures sit at 382 horsepower, but stage 1 tunes from proven names like Bootmod3 and MHD routinely see 430-450whp on a completely stock car. Add a downpipe, a quality intake, and a charge pipe upgrade, and you're pushing close to 500whp while still driving to work every day without drama. The B58 is one of the most tuneable platforms in the current BMW lineup - full stop. For anyone looking to get started on the engine side, our Engine section has everything from intake kits to full turbo upgrade packages for both the B48 and B58.
One known weak point on the B58 in particular is the factory charge pipe - it's plastic and will crack under sustained boost, especially after a tune. Upgrade this early. Similarly, the OEM intercooler is a limiting factor the moment you start pushing beyond stage 1 power levels. Burger Motorsports, VRSF, and Mishimoto all make well-regarded FMIC kits for the G29 platform. These aren't optional if you're planning to tune seriously - they're priority upgrades.
Building the G29: Daily Driver vs. Track-Focused
The G29 splits cleanly into two mod philosophies, and knowing which direction you're heading saves money in the long run.
For a refined, fast daily, the path is well established: start with a tune (Bootmod3 is the community standard), sort the charge pipe and intercooler, then move to exhaust. The factory exhaust is heavily muffled - almost frustratingly so - and a quality cat-back or valved system transforms the car's character completely. The B58 sounds remarkable when the exhaust restriction is removed. Check out our Exhaust page for options ranging from sport tone daily drivers to full race systems. From there, a set of quality coilovers or sport springs, and a wheel and tire upgrade, and you've got a car that destroys anything near its price range on a back road. Browse Suspension for coilover kits from KW, BC Racing, and Öhlins - all well-supported on the G29. For wheel fitment guides and tire recommendations, Wheels & Tires covers sizing, offsets, and the most popular setups running in the community right now.
For track use, the conversation changes. The G29 is rear-wheel drive, well-balanced, and responds beautifully to stiffer damping and alignment adjustments. Prioritize brake cooling early - the factory brakes fade on track - and look at stickier compound pads with quality fluid before throwing big money at suspension. Once the chassis is sorted, an aero upgrade to manage front-end lift at speed is worth considering. Our Body & Aero section covers splitters, diffusers, and trunk spoilers with proven downforce numbers for the G29 specifically.
Trusted brands consistently performing on this platform include Burger Motorsports, VRSF, KW Suspension, Dinan, Bimmerworld, and aFe Power. Whether you're building a weekend canyon carver or chasing lap times, the G29 is one of the most rewarding Bimmers to work on right now - and the community support continues to grow as more cars hit the secondhand market and enthusiast ownership increases. This platform has a long runway ahead of it.
