The JB4 port injection box is the right answer to a fueling problem you only have if you're already deep into E85 and big turbo territory.
What I like

- -Install complexity jumps hard once you're plumbing a second fuel circuit under the hood
- -Warranty exposure goes up the more hardware you're stuffing in the engine bay, unplugging JB4 doesn't erase evidence of the rest
Bottom line
Buy this if you're running or building toward E85/Stage 2+ power on a B58, S55, or S58 and your factory direct injection is already maxed out. Skip it entirely if you're on a stock turbo pump gas Stage 1 car, this thing has nothing to offer you at that level.
Alright, let's clear something up right away because the name confuses people every single time it comes up in the shop. This is not a tune. This is not the JB4 itself. This is the port injection controller Burger Motorsports sells as a companion piece for guys who already have a JB4 running and have hit a wall with fueling. Different job entirely.
What problem this actually solves
Modern BMW turbo engines, your B58, S55, S58, run direct injection only from the factory. Great for efficiency, fine for stock power, fine even for a mild Stage 1 bump. But direct injection has a physical ceiling. Once you're pushing real boost with a bigger turbo, or you're running E85 or an E30/E50 blend where you need way more fuel volume to hit the same air-fuel target, the factory high pressure pump and injectors run out of room. You can only ask a direct injection system to flow so much before it just can't keep up, and that's when you start seeing lean spikes under load that scare the hell out of anyone who's actually watching their logs.
Port injection adds a second, low pressure fuel circuit spraying into the intake ports as a supplement to the factory DI system. The JB4 PI controller is the brain that manages that second circuit, tells it when to come on, how much to add, and coordinates it with whatever map the JB4 is running. It doesn't replace your tune, it works alongside it.
Who this is actually for
Full E85 builds. Aggressive Stage 2+ setups with a bigger turbo. Guys chasing numbers where meth injection used to be the answer and now port injection is the cleaner, more consistent alternative. If you're on a stock turbo B58 daily just running 91 octane and a JB4 Stage 1 map, you don't need this, full stop. You'd be buying a solution to a problem you don't have. Install reality
This isn't a plug and play afternoon job. You're not just wiring in a controller, you're plumbing an entire second fuel system, injectors, rail, pump, wiring, all of it has to physically fit in an engine bay that wasn't designed with a second fuel circuit in mind. On an F30 or G20 that means creative routing around the factory harness and finding rail space near the intake manifold. On the M cars, S55 and S58, you've got even less room to work with. I've done a couple of these in the shop and budget a full day minimum, more if it's your first one.
Piggyback vs flash for this specific job
Because this pairs with JB4 rather than a flash tune, you keep the map switching flexibility that makes JB4 useful in the first place, dial in an aggressive E85 map, switch back to a mild pump gas map for the daily commute, all without touching a laptop. A flash based port injection solution exists too but it locks you into whatever calibration is written to the ECU. If you're already in the JB4 ecosystem and like being able to flip maps on the fly, staying in that ecosystem for your fueling controller too just makes sense rather than running two separate tuning philosophies side by side.
Warranty and reversibility, the honest version
JB4 itself unplugs clean, that part's true and it's one of the real advantages over a flash. But once you've plumbed a second fuel system into the car, unplugging a controller doesn't hide the extra injectors sitting in your intake ports or the second pump wired into your fuel system. Any tech doing a real inspection is going to find it. So don't kid yourself that this stays invisible at the dealership.
