Bent Backing Plate Contact

A bent backing plate or dust shield that contacts the rotor creates a grinding or scraping noise that is often mistaken for worn brake pads or internal damage. This condition typically develops after wheel removal, brake service, or a minor impact to the wheel area. The backing plate sits behind the rotor and normally clears it by a small margin, but once bent inward, it will drag during rotation and produce noise on every wheel revolution or specifically when braking.
What it feels like
The primary symptom is a grinding or scraping sound coming from one wheel corner. The noise may be continuous when the wheel spins, or it may be loudest during braking when pad pressure increases rotor thickness slightly. Some owners report the sound starting after recent brake work or tire service. You may feel a slight pulsing in the brake pedal if the contact is severe enough to cause rotor wobble, though mild backing plate rub usually produces noise without vibration. The grinding is often mistaken for advanced pad wear or rotor damage.
How to confirm it
- Jack the vehicle safely and spin the wheel by hand while listening closely. A bent backing plate will produce a consistent scraping or ticking sound at one point per rotation as the contact point passes under the rotor.
- Inspect the gap between the dust shield and rotor all the way around the rotor circumference. Look for any visible contact marks, paint rub, or areas where the gap narrows significantly below normal clearance (typically 2-4 mm depending on model).
- If a bend is visible, attempt to carefully straighten the backing plate away from the rotor using a soft-faced mallet or rubber hammer and a wooden block. Do not strike directly on the rotor or bearing area.
- Spin the wheel again after adjustment to confirm the noise has stopped and clearance is even all around.
- If the backing plate cannot be straightened or damage is extensive, replacement will be necessary. Refer to the parts section below for rotor and backing plate kits matched to your BMW model.
