On BMWs equipped with rear drum-in-hat parking brake systems, misadjusted shoes or worn hardware can drag inside the rotor hat and produce a grinding or scraping noise. This fault commonly appears after rear brake service, improper parking brake setup, or when the adjuster mechanism has loosened. The noise may be intermittent or constant depending on parking brake position and drive phase.

What it feels like

You hear grinding or scraping from the rear, particularly when the parking brake is set or during low-speed maneuvers. The sound may intensify when turning or accelerating away from a stop. Some owners report a metal-on-metal grinding that sounds like brake pad wear but occurs even when the foot brake is not applied. After recent brake work, the noise often starts immediately. The grinding typically stops or changes pitch when you release the parking brake.

How to confirm it

  1. Listen carefully to isolate the noise to the rear axle. Set and release the parking brake while stationary or creeping forward at low speed to see if the sound correlates with parking brake position.
  2. Raise the rear wheels safely and inspect the inside of each rotor, looking at the drum hat area for contact marks, scoring, or debris where the parking brake shoes sit.
  3. Check parking brake shoe clearance by spinning the wheel by hand. The shoes should not drag. If they catch or bind, the adjuster needs resetting.
  4. Release the parking brake fully, spin the wheel again, and confirm free rotation. Resistance or grinding at this point points to shoe drag.
  5. If available, consult the service manual for your model year to verify correct shoe adjustment procedure and hardware torque specs, then readjust or service the parking brake assembly.
