A binding strut mount bearing sits at the top of your front strut and allows the spring and shock to rotate freely as you turn the wheel. When this bearing wears or seizes, the rubber and metal components can no longer move smoothly. The result is a sharp pop or clunk that occurs during steering, most noticeable at full lock or during tight parking maneuvers. BMW owners report this frequently enough that it ranks as a common front-end noise complaint.

What it feels like

You'll hear a distinct pop or clunk from one or both front corners when turning the steering wheel, especially near full lock or during slow speed steering inputs. The noise may happen once as you start to turn or repeat while holding the wheel at full lock. Some owners describe it as a spring jumping or a binding sensation in the steering. The pop typically occurs while stationary or at low speeds, though it can also happen while driving and turning. The noise is localized to the front strut towers and is most obvious in quiet conditions.

How to confirm it

  1. Park on level ground and turn the steering wheel fully left and right while sitting still. Listen carefully at each front strut tower for a pop or creaking sound. Note which side produces the noise and whether it occurs at full lock or during small inputs.
  2. Inspect the top of each front strut where it meets the chassis. Look for torn rubber, rust on the bearing surfaces, or visible binding marks on the spring or mount. A worn bearing often shows discoloration or crusty corrosion.
  3. Have a helper watch the strut top while you turn the wheel slowly. A binding bearing may show the spring shifting abruptly or the entire mount rotating unevenly instead of smoothly.
  4. Compare both sides. If only one side pops, that strut mount bearing is the likely culprit. If both sides are noisy, both bearings may be worn.
