A worn outer CV joint on the front axle produces popping, clicking, or snapping sounds during cornering, especially when turning under acceleration or load. This is one of the most frequent drivetrain noise complaints on BMWs. The outer joint wears as the rubber boot splits or deteriorates, allowing grease to escape and dirt to enter, which breaks down the ball bearings inside.
What it feels like
You'll hear a distinct pop or click when turning the wheel fully in either direction while driving at low speed. The noise typically comes from the front end on the outside of the turn (the loaded side). It may repeat multiple times while holding a sharp turn under light throttle, or occur as a single pop at the moment you initiate the turn. The sound is louder under acceleration and may disappear when driving straight. Some owners describe it as a rifle-shot crack or rhythmic clicking if the joint is severely worn.
How to confirm it
- Road-test at low speed with light acceleration while making tight turns left and right. Note which direction produces the loudest noise and whether it occurs only while moving under load.
- Inspect both front CV axle boots visually for splits, grease sling, or loose clamps. A torn boot is a strong indicator of joint wear.
- Raise the front end on jack stands and grab each front axle near the wheel. Articulate the suspension up and down while feeling for play, clicking, or rough grinding in the joint.
- Compare the noise intensity between left-lock and right-lock turns. The louder side indicates which outer joint is worn, since that joint carries more load during the turn.
