Moisture inside a BMW headlight or taillight often points to a leak at the rear service covers, bulb access caps, or their rubber gaskets. These entry points can fail if the gasket hardens, cracks, or seats incorrectly, or if the cap itself is missing or damaged. Water enters slowly, pooling or streaking inside the lens even when the main lens seam looks dry.

01

What it feels like

You notice condensation, fogging, or visible water droplets inside the headlight or taillight housing. Early signs include a haze that may clear briefly when the lamp warms up, but persistent moisture that returns after rain or car washing is the real red flag. In severe cases, you see streaks, pools of water, or corrosion forming on the reflector bowl inside. The bulb socket area may feel damp, and moisture might be visible around the edges of the rear access cap when you look at it from inside the trunk or wheel well.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Open the trunk or access panel and locate the rear bulb cap or service cover on the affected light. Note any visible cracks, missing pieces, or rubber gasket damage.
  2. Inspect the gasket seating surface on both the cap and the lamp body. A hardened, cracked, or pinched gasket will not seal. Check for debris or corrosion blocking a tight fit.
  3. Dry the lamp interior completely with a cloth, reinstall the covers, and retest after rain or wash to see if moisture returns within 24 hours.
  4. Perform a soap or smoke test around each rear cap, connector port, and vent hole. Bubbles or smoke movement will show exactly where water is entering.
