Cracked Lens or Housing

A crack in the headlight lens, housing, or mounting area allows water to enter directly, causing persistent moisture inside the lamp. Unlike temporary fogging that clears as the lamp warms, a structural crack admits water repeatedly, especially after rain or car washes. This condition requires inspection and often part replacement to prevent electrical damage and restore proper light output.
What it feels like
You will notice water droplets, streaks, or pooled water inside the headlight that does not clear after the lamp has been on for several minutes. Moisture may appear on the inner lens or collect along the bottom of the housing. In some cases, you may spot a visible crack on the outer lens or see drip marks running down from a seam or mounting point. These signs point to active water ingress rather than normal condensation and typically worsen after wet weather or washing.
How to confirm it
- Inspect the outer lens surface, rear housing, mounting tabs, and seam lines under bright light for hairline cracks or gaps.
- Look inside the headlight for water pooling, streaks, or droplets rather than a light film of condensation.
- Perform a soapy-water test or smoke test around the suspect areas to pinpoint where water is entering.
- Check the rear cover, vent cap, and connector seals for cracks or loose fit, as these are common leak points on BMW lights.
