Clogged fuel injectors restrict or block the spray pattern that delivers fuel into one or more cylinders. This fault shows up as a steady or intermittent loss of engine power, sluggish throttle response, and sometimes rough idle. It's common on higher-mileage BMWs, especially those that use low-quality fuel or have skipped fuel system service intervals.

01

What it feels like

You'll notice the engine feels lazy when you press the accelerator, particularly under load or at highway speeds. Power drops noticeably from one moment to the next, and the car may shake or vibrate slightly at idle or low revs. Some owners report a check engine light combined with a slight smell of unburned fuel. If multiple injectors are clogged, the loss of power becomes more obvious. Cold starts may be harder, and fuel economy will suffer.

How to confirm it

  1. Scan the engine control module for misfire codes (P0300-P0308 range) and fuel trim faults. Cylinder-specific misfires point toward a single clogged injector.
  2. Use a fuel pressure gauge to check whether the fuel rail is holding correct pressure (typically 50-70 psi at idle for port-injected models, higher for direct injection). Low pressure suggests a pump or filter problem upstream.
  3. Perform an injector balance test with a diagnostic scanner to measure fuel delivery volume per cylinder. A variance of more than 5-10% between cylinders indicates restriction or a faulty solenoid.
  4. Inspect fuel quality by draining a small amount from the tank. Contamination or water suggests fuel system cleaning is needed before injector replacement.
  5. Review service records for fuel filter age and fuel system maintenance. If the filter hasn't been changed or fuel was added from an unknown source, contamination is likely.

Parts that fix it

Fuel injector problems often benefit from a fuel system cleaning first, but persistent faults or physical damage may require pump or injector replacement. If fuel pressure is low across all cylinders, the high-pressure pump is the first target.
