Worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils trigger misfires that rob your engine of smooth power delivery. The misfire may be constant across all cylinders or isolated to one or two, depending on which coil or plug has failed. This fault typically announces itself under acceleration or load, though you may notice rough idle or hesitation in normal driving too. BMW community guidance flags plugs and coils as the first inspection point when sudden power loss occurs.
What it feels like
A misfiring engine feels like a stumble or hiccup when you press the throttle, especially under moderate to hard acceleration. Power delivery becomes uneven. You might see the check engine light on the dashboard, sometimes accompanied by a visible misfire counter in the OBD readout. The engine may run rough at idle or shake slightly at a standstill. In some cases the loss is intermittent, appearing only when the engine is cold or under high load. Fuel economy drops noticeably because unburned fuel passes through the catalytic converter.
How to confirm it
- Plug a code reader into the OBD port and scan for misfire codes. Note which cylinder or cylinders are misfiring (P0300 is random misfire, P0301-P0306 pinpoint specific cylinders).
- Remove each spark plug one at a time and inspect for wear, fouling with oil or fuel residue, and improper gap. Compare gap against your engine's spec (typically 0.028-0.035 inch on BMW gasoline engines).
- Visually inspect the ignition coils for cracks, corrosion on connectors, or oil seepage. Check that connectors are fully seated.
- Swap ignition coils between two cylinders, clear the codes, and drive the car. If the misfire code moves to the cylinder where you swapped the coil, the coil is faulty. If the code stays on the same cylinder, suspect the spark plug or fuel injector.
