A cracked headlight lens or housing creates a direct water entry point that allows moisture to pool inside the lamp assembly. Even small hairline fractures or impact damage can compromise the seal, leading to persistent condensation, fogging, or pooled water that does not clear on its own. This is distinct from brief fogging caused by temperature swings, which typically clears within minutes. A crack turns a cosmetic issue into a functional problem that degrades visibility and can damage internal bulb circuits over time.

What it feels like

Water droplets or fog visible inside the headlight that persist for hours or days, even during dry weather. You may notice moisture trails, dirt streaks, or dried residue around a specific area of the lens or where the housing meets the body. On closer inspection, the affected headlight looks duller or cloudier than the other side, sometimes with visible bubbling or separation at the crack location. The condensation returns quickly after each drive, or you spot standing water pooling at the bottom of the lens assembly.

How to confirm it

  1. Inspect the outer lens surface and rear housing under bright light. Look for hairline cracks, chips, or stress fractures. Pay attention to mounting points and the seam where the lens meets the plastic housing.
  2. Examine the crack area for moisture trails, dirt marks, or discoloration that indicates a leak path. Wipe the lens dry and watch for water to reappear within minutes of running the engine or after exposure to humidity.
  3. If a visible crack is unclear, perform a smoke test. Hold an incense stick or smoke pen near suspected cracks while the lamp is dark. Smoke will be drawn into any breach in the seal.
  4. As a secondary check, apply light pressure or a hose mist directly at the suspected crack area. If water enters the lamp interior within seconds, the seal is broken and replacement is needed.
